I believe that this standard is long over due, and will eventually make the development of medical devices and their user interfaces more usable while reducing usage errors. As a practitioner and Usability consultant, I do find applying the Standard perplexing and a challenge when prior usability consulting in the medical industry is a requirement in order to be truly effective. I have been developing some concepts for communicating medical tasks for education, training and operation in medical and healthcare environments, but need access to and input from real-world medical procedures in order to validate my designs.
This standard surely has impacted on the effective and efficient use of my proposed design concepts, and how the concepts will be tested and validated. A further understanding of targeted medical processes and procedures is required, and any suggestions on how to obtain this access is desired. Looking forward to learning more about this Standard and the application of the UCD process. Great Article!!!
